The silver birch and ancient oak are rooted strong and deep,
While shadows of the pine and yew protect the forest's sleep.
Their spreading branches cool the earth and purify the air
And give the foxes and the birds a shelter they can share.
The rowan, beech and stately ash have roots that bind the ground
And keep the soil from being lost when heavy rains come round.
Through autumn frosts and summer storms that sweep across the hill,
I rest beside the quiet larch and let the world go still.
