  1. Once upon a time, there was a fisherman and his wife.

    Er was eens een visser en zijn vrouw.

  2. They lived in a small hut near the sea.

  3. The fisherman went to the sea every day to fish.

    De visser ging elke dag naar de zee om te vissen.

  4. One day, he caught a magic fish.

  5. The fish could talk and asked to be set free.

  6. The fisherman put the fish back in the water.

    De visser zette de vis terug in het water.

  7. When he returned home, he told his wife.

    Toen hij thuiskwam, vertelde hij het aan zijn vrouw.

  8. She told him to ask for a nicer house.

    Zij zei dat hij om een mooier huis moest vragen.

  9. The fisherman went back to the sea and called the fish.

  12. But soon the wife wanted a palace.

  14. The fish gave them a big, beautiful palace.

    De vis gaf hen een groot en prachtig paleis.

  15. They had servants and fancy clothes.

    Ze hadden bedienden en elegante kleding.

  16. But the wife still was not happy.

    Maar de vrouw was nog steeds niet gelukkig.

  17. She wanted to be empress.

    Ze wilde keizerin zijn.

  18. The fisherman went to the sea with fear.

    De visser ging met angst naar de zee.

  19. The sea was grey and very rough.

    De zee was grijs en erg onrustig.

  20. The fish granted the wish and she became empress.

    De vis vervulde de wens en zij werd keizerin.

  21. Now she had all the power.

    Nu had zij alle macht.

  22. But she wanted more. She wanted to be like God.

    Maar ze wilde meer. Ze wilde als God zijn.

  23. The fisherman didn’t want to ask for that, but he did.

    De visser wilde dat niet vragen, maar hij deed het.

  24. The sea was black and the wind was strong.

    De zee was zwart en de wind was sterk.

  25. The fish didn’t answer anything.

    De vis antwoordde niets.

  26. When the fisherman returned, the palace was gone.

    Toen de visser terugkwam, was het paleis verdwenen.

  27. The wife was back in the old hut.

    De vrouw was terug in de oude hut.

  28. And so they lived like at the beginning.

    En zo leefden ze zoals in het begin.

  29. They had lost everything for wanting too much.

    Ze hadden alles verloren door te veel te willen.
