We set off at four, head torches lit,
three on a rope, our coughing guide ahead;
tre på samma rep, vår hostande guide framför oss;
I kept my eyes on the light at my feet
and tested the snow with every tread.
och prövade snön med varje steg.
After two hours the sun came up,
Efter två timmar gick solen upp,
and I lifted my eyes from the ground;
och jag lyfte blicken från marken;
I'd forgotten the mountain beneath my boots —
jag hade glömt berget under mina kängor –
now half of Ecuador lay all around.
nu låg halva Ecuador runt omkring mig.
The thin air never stole my breath,
Den tunna luften tog aldrig andan ur mig,
but every step cost me twice the time,
men varje steg tog dubbelt så lång tid,
and the same sun that painted the view
och samma sol som målade landskapet
had started a clock on the rest of the climb.
hade startat klockan för resten av klättringen.
My friend was set on reaching the top,
but the three of us shared a single rope,
men vi tre satt fast i samma rep,
and they say most falls happen on the way down,
when tired feet get careless on the slope.
när trötta fötter blir vårdslösa i sluttningen.
So I gave in; we three turned back
Så jag gav upp; vi tre vände om
and slid down the snow in the morning sun;
och gled nerför snön i morgonsolen;
an hour later, the team that pushed on
came down too — the mountain had won.
ner – berget hade segrat.
