Text and translation

Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland,

Lord von Ribbeck of Ribbeck in Havelland,

ein Birnbaum in seinem Garten stand,

a pear tree stood in his garden,

und kam die goldne Herbsteszeit

and when the golden autumn time came

und die Birnen leuchteten weit und breit,

and the pears shone far and wide,

da stopfte, wenn′s Mittag vom Turme scholl,

then, when the noon bell rang from the tower,

der von Ribbeck sich beide Taschen voll,

von Ribbeck would stuff both his pockets full,

und kam in Pantinen ein Junge daher,

and if a boy came by in slippers,

so rief er: "Junge, wiste ′ ne Beer?"

he would call: "Boy, want a pear?"

And if a girl came by, he would call: "Little girl,

kumm man röwer, ick hebb ′ ne Birn."

come over here, I’ve got a pear."

So ging es viel Jahre, bis lobesam

So it went on for many years, until praiseworthily

von Ribbeck of Ribbeck came to die.

Er fühlte sein Ende. ′ s war Herbsteszeit,

He felt his end. It was autumn time,

wieder lachten die Birnen weit und breit,

again the pears gleamed far and wide,

da sagte von Ribbeck: "Ich scheide nun ab.

then von Ribbeck said: "I now depart.

Legt mir eine Birne mit ins Grab."

Put a pear with me in the grave."

Und drei Tage darauf aus dem Doppeldachhaus

And three days later, from the house with double roof

trugen von Ribbeck sie hinaus,

they carried von Ribbeck out,

alle Bauern und Büdner mit Feiergesicht

all farmers and cotters with solemn faces

sangen: "Jesus meine Zuversicht",

sang: "Jesus, my confidence",

und die Kinder klagten, das Herze schwer:

and the children lamented, their hearts heavy:

"He ist dod nu. Wer giwt uns nu ′ ne Beer?"

"He is dead now. Who will give us a pear now?"

So klagten die Kinder. Das war nicht recht,

So the children lamented. That was not right,

ach, sie kannten den alten Ribbeck schlecht,

ah, they knew old Ribbeck poorly,

der neue freilich, der knausert und spart,

the new one indeed is stingy and saves,

hält Park und Birnbaum strenge verwahrt.

keeps the park and pear tree strictly guarded.

Aber der alte, vorahnend schon

But the old one, already foreseeing,

und voll Mißtrauen gegen den eigenen Sohn,

and full of mistrust toward his own son,

der wußte genau, was er damals tat,

he knew exactly what he was doing then,

when he asked for a pear in his grave,

and in the third year from the quiet house

ein Birnbaumsprößling sproßt heraus.

a pear tree sprout emerged.

And the years go by with their ups and downs,

long since a pear tree arches over the grave,

uind in der goldnen Herbsteszeit

and in the golden autumn time

leuchtet′s wieder weit und breit.

it gleams again far and wide.

Und kommt ein Jung′ übern Kirchhof her,

And if a boy comes across the churchyard,

the tree whispers: "Want a pear?"

And if a girl comes, it whispers: "Little girl,

kumm man röwer, ick gew di ′ ne Birn."

come over here, I’ll give you a pear."

So spendet Segen noch immer die Hand

So still blesses with gifts the hand

des von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland.

of von Ribbeck of Ribbeck in Havelland.
