Once upon a time, there was a fisherman and his wife.
Era uma vez um pescador e a sua esposa.
They lived in a small hut near the sea.
Viviam numa pequena cabana perto do mar.
The fisherman went to the sea every day to fish.
O pescador ia todos os dias ao mar pescar.
One day, he caught a magic fish.
Um dia, apanhou um peixe mágico.
The fish could talk and asked to be set free.
O peixe podia falar e pediu para ser libertado.
The fisherman put the fish back in the water.
O pescador colocou o peixe de volta na água.
When he returned home, he told his wife.
Quando voltou a casa, contou à sua esposa.
She told him to ask for a nicer house.

The fisherman went back to the sea and called the fish.

The fish granted the wish.
O peixe concedeu o desejo.
Now they lived in a nice house.
Agora viviam numa casa bonita.
But soon the wife wanted a palace.
Mas logo a esposa quis um palácio.
She asked the fisherman to talk to the fish again.
Pediu ao pescador que falasse com o peixe outra vez.
The fish gave them a big, beautiful palace.
O peixe deu-lhes um grande e belo palácio.
They had servants and fancy clothes.
Tinham criados e roupas elegantes.
But the wife still was not happy.
Mas a esposa ainda não estava feliz.
She wanted to be empress.
Queria ser imperatriz.
The fisherman went to the sea with fear.
O pescador foi ao mar com medo.
The sea was grey and very rough.
O mar estava cinzento e muito agitado.
The fish granted the wish and she became empress.
O peixe concedeu o desejo e ela tornou-se imperatriz.
Now she had all the power.
Agora ela tinha todo o poder.
But she wanted more. She wanted to be like God.
Mas queria mais. Queria ser como Deus.
The fisherman didn’t want to ask for that, but he did.
O pescador não queria pedir isso, mas fê-lo.
The sea was black and the wind was strong.
O mar estava negro e o vento era forte.
The fish didn’t answer anything.
O peixe não respondeu nada.
When the fisherman returned, the palace was gone.
Quando o pescador voltou, o palácio tinha desaparecido.
The wife was back in the old hut.
A esposa estava de volta à velha cabana.
And so they lived like at the beginning.
E assim viveram como no início.
They had lost everything for wanting too much.
Tinham perdido tudo por quererem demasiado.
