Tekst en vertaling

"Hope" is the thing with feathers

"Hoop" is dat ding met veren.

That perches in the soul,

Dat neerstrijkt in de ziel,

And sings the tune without the words,

En zingt de melodie zonder woorden,

And never stops at all,

En stopt nooit.

And sweetest in the Gale is heard;

En het zoetst wordt gehoord in de storm;

And sore must be the storm

En hevig moet de storm zijn

That could abash the little bird

Die het vogeltje zou kunnen beschamen

That kept so many warm.

Dat zo velen warm hield.

I've heard it in the chillest land,

Ik heb het gehoord in het koudste land,

And on the strangest sea;

En op de vreemdste zee;

Yet, never, in extremity,

Toch, nooit, in uiterste nood,

It asked a crumb of me.

Vroeg het mij om een kruimel.
