1. Il forno era chiuso, così ho preso l'altra via,

   The bakery was closed, so I took the other way,

2. senza pane, senza fretta e senza compagnia.

   without bread, without hurry, and without company.

3. Il tram era appena partito; alla fermata

   The streetcar had just left; at the stop

4. sono rimasta lì, sotto la pioggia, bagnata.

   I stayed there, in the rain, soaked.

5. Uno sconosciuto: «Ombrello in due?» E piano piano

   A stranger said, "Umbrella for two?" And little by little

6. abbiamo fatto la stessa strada e non era strano.

   we walked the same path, and it wasn’t strange.

7. Vent'anni dopo, il caffè me lo fa ancora lui in cucina.

   Twenty years later, he still makes me coffee in the kitchen.

8. Grazie, forno, per la tua porta chiusa quella mattina.

   Thank you, bakery, for your closed door that morning.
