Siamo partiti alle quattro, al buio;
We set off at four, in the dark;
la guida tossiva e non si fermava;
the guide was coughing and wouldn’t stop;
fissavo il fascio della frontale
I kept my eyes fixed on the beam of my headlamp
e stavo attento a dove il piede andava.
and watched where I placed my foot.
Due ore così, poi all'improvviso,
Two hours like that, then suddenly,
ho alzato gli occhi: era giorno;
I looked up: it was daylight;
non mi ricordavo più del vulcano —
I’d forgotten about the volcano—
ora mezzo Ecuador tutto intorno.
now half of Ecuador surrounded me.
In quota non mi mancava il respiro,
At altitude, I wasn’t short of breath,
ma avanzavamo a passi rallentati,
but we moved forward at a slower pace,
e col sole che dipingeva il paesaggio
and with the sun painting the landscape
avevamo i minuti contati.
our minutes were numbered.
Il mio amico puntava alla vetta,
My friend was making for the summit,
ma in cordata o si va o si resta,
but when you’re roped together, you either go on or stay put,
e dicono che il peggio è la discesa
and they say the worst part is the descent
quando la stanchezza annebbia la testa.
when exhaustion clouds your mind.
Ho mollato; siamo tornati indietro,
I gave up; we turned back,
scivolando al sole — e mi è piaciuto;
sliding down in the sun—and I enjoyed it;
un'ora dopo, giù anche chi ha insistito,
an hour later, even those who’d insisted were coming down,
e la montagna non ha ceduto.
and the mountain hadn’t given in.
