Once upon a time, there was a fisherman and his wife.
C'era una volta un pescatore e sua moglie.
They lived in a small hut near the sea.
Vivevano in una piccola capanna vicino al mare.
The fisherman went to the sea every day to fish.
Il pescatore andava tutti i giorni al mare a pescare.
One day, he caught a magic fish.
Un giorno, catturò un pesce magico.
The fish could talk and asked to be set free.
Il pesce poteva parlare e chiese di essere liberato.
The fisherman put the fish back in the water.
Il pescatore rimise il pesce in acqua.
When he returned home, he told his wife.
Quando tornò a casa, raccontò a sua moglie.
She told him to ask for a nicer house.
Lei gli disse di chiedere una casa migliore.
The fisherman went back to the sea and called the fish.
Il pescatore tornò al mare e chiamò il pesce.
The fish granted the wish.
Il pesce esaudì il desiderio.
Now they lived in a nice house.
Ora vivevano in una bella casa.
But soon the wife wanted a palace.
Ma presto la moglie volle un palazzo.
She asked the fisherman to talk to the fish again.
Chiese al pescatore di parlare di nuovo con il pesce.
The fish gave them a big, beautiful palace.
Il pesce diede loro un grande e bellissimo palazzo.
They had servants and fancy clothes.
Avevano servitori e abiti eleganti.
But the wife still was not happy.
Ma la moglie non era ancora felice.
She wanted to be empress.
Voleva essere imperatrice.
The fisherman went to the sea with fear.
Il pescatore andò al mare con paura.
The sea was grey and very rough.
Il mare era grigio e molto agitato.
The fish granted the wish and she became empress.
Il pesce esaudì il desiderio e lei divenne imperatrice.
Now she had all the power.
Ora lei aveva tutto il potere.
But she wanted more. She wanted to be like God.
Ma voleva di più. Voleva essere come Dio.
The fisherman didn’t want to ask for that, but he did.
Il pescatore non voleva chiedere questo, ma lo fece.
The sea was black and the wind was strong.
Il mare era nero e il vento era forte.
The fish didn’t answer anything.
Il pesce non rispose nulla.
When the fisherman returned, the palace was gone.
Quando il pescatore tornò, il palazzo era sparito.
The wife was back in the old hut.
La moglie era di nuovo nella vecchia capanna.
And so they lived like at the beginning.
E così vissero come all'inizio.
They had lost everything for wanting too much.
Avevano perso tutto per volere troppo.
